DUKES!

Do you know what time of the year it is? IT’S ELECTION TIME! Elections here at JMU are broken into two categories. There are the Major Elections and the Minor Elections.

Major Elections are the elections for Student Body President, Student Body Vice President, Executive Treasurer, and Student Representative to the Board of Visitors.

Minor Elections are for Class Council elections as well as College Senator elections.

In order to keep the elections process in check the student body president appoints an Election Commissioner. The commissioner’s job is to create a commission and supervise all election processes.

The elections commission can consist of up to nine members and not be less than five. The commission is made up of at least three SGA members, one honor council member, and one general student. Its main job is to assist the commissioner in enforcing the elections policy and advertising the elections.Even though a lot of the duties seem to be centered around enforcing the policy, it is just as important a duty to advertise for the election. The more people who vote, the better!

If you have any interest on being on the commission APPLY! Applications can be found on the SGA website and are due by noon on February 14th, 2013.

If you have any questions please send them to JMUelections@gmail.com

Dukes Vote Results!

Today is finally Election Day 2012! We have rallied, registered and prepared, but now all there is left to do is go to the polls and wait for the results to pour in. Before we know what America decided, we can see what JMU decided! In our Dukes Vote Mock Election, SGA posted an election via BeInvolved over the period of a week. The results were close to say the least. President Obama won, but by less than 1%! The results are as follows:

  • Obama 48.24%
  • Romney 47.36%
  • Johnson 1.75%
  • Goode 0%
  • Stein 0%
  • Write In 2.63%

Will JMU and the USA match up? Only time will tell, but until then, get your voice heard! If you are registered in Harrisonburg, you can catch one of the JMU College Democrats shuttles to Spotswood Elementary school every fifteen minutes until 6:30 PM today.

Announcing: Minor Elections Candidates

With major elections over and done, we move on to electing each class council position as well as the college senator seats.  Class Council positions are president, vice president, treasurer and secretary for the rising sophomore to the rising senior class (freshman are elected in the Fall).  Their jobs include planning educational and entertaining events for not only their class, but the entire university.  They interact directly with the Executive Vice President to perform their job tasks.  They also have a voting voice in the Senate.

College senators are the acting voice for their constituents.  They are the voting members of the Senate and are the ones who keep YOU in mind when they make decisions.  Senators also serve on specialized committees internally that are assigned by the Speaker of the Senate at the beginning of the Fall semester.  Each college has a varied number of seats that need to be filled and each year senators must be re-elected in their respective colleges. In order to be elected, senators must receive votes from THEIR college. For example, someone running for an Arts and Letters seat, cannot receive a vote from an ISAT major.

  • College of Arts and Letters: 6 seats
  • College of Business: 5 seats
  • College of Integrated Science and Technology: 8 seats
  • College of Science and Mathematics: 3 seats
  • College of Visual and Performing Arts: 2 seats
  • College of Education/IDLS: 1 seat
  • Graduate Seats: 2 seats

As of right now, these are the individuals who are OFFICIALLY CAMPAIGNING for their position through the elections commission. Others may be doing a write-in campaign and have the same chance of being elected.
