Helpful Finals Info

With some people’s finals beginning tomorrow, we thought we would take the time to give you some last minute links and helpful information to get you prepared:

  1.  Need to know WHEN your finals are happening? Not all professors tell you the right day on your syllabus. Check out this link to make sure you have the correct date and time. Also, if the date is different, EMAIL your prof to double check.
  2. Need an extra cram session? BOTH Carrier and East Campus Libraries will be open for 24 hours during finals week.  Be sure to book a study room if you want some quiet time, or you need to work with a group.
  3. Need a late night snack to power you through a study sesh? JMU Dining has select locations open 24 hours for your convenience, such as Starbucks and Top Dog. And other places have late night hours as well.
  4. Need help with that final paper, speech, or presentation? University writing center has some experienced staff to help you in whatever situation you are in.  You can make as many appointments as you need to get the best grade you can.  Take advantage of them! They often see things you might not.
  5. Need to relax before you take a test? UREC has massages you can book for as little as $35 for a half hour! Also, UPB is sponsoring a FREE relaxation station on FRIDAY DEC. 9th in Transitions from 8-12p.

All in all, the best thing you can do is be prepared.  You’ve been doing well all semester, so don’t freak out too much.  Get some sleep, hang out with your friends, and enjoy your last few days at JMU before the holidays.

You got this Dukes!

Harrisonburg’s Got Talent

Being a super senior this year and just getting out of the athletic world, I never really knew about all the talent people who walk around Harrisonburg and JMU’s campus each and everyday.  Since becoming involved in two different organizations this year, my outlook on talent has broadened exponentially.

For example, this Wednesday night in TDU is a UPB Presents… Spotlight Series featuring Everyone’s Heart and let me just tell you, their music is phenomenal.  As a four member acoustic indie rock group, they take songs and turn them into something original.

The Spotlight Sounds committee of UPB is even letting you contribute to the show’s design!  Today, tomorrow and even Wednesday afternoon you and your friends can be apart of the backdrop for the show.  Come by TDU after you grab your Dukes or Top Dog for lunch and trace your hand inside a heart (get it, everyone’s heart) and write something nice inside your hand. Then, come back on Wednesday and see your contribution to Harrisonburg’s talent.

If you are in need of a study break, a hump day treat (because, oh yea, there are FREE COOKIES!) or just want to expand what you think Harrisonburg has to offer, come check out Everyone’s Heart on Wednesday in TDU from 7-8.  I promise you won’t be disappointed with their sound, the atmosphere, or the treats.

Crazy Commons and Fall Concert Reveal

Tuesday afternoon the circular space between Dhall, the stairs going to the Quad and the hill leading down to the bookstore will be busy with people.  The reason for all the commotion? It’s the first Crazy Commons put on by University Program Board (UPB)! Crazy Commons will officially start at 11am and run until 2 pm and is a great way to find out what is going around campus, take part in games and just generally have a good time.

This particular Crazy Commons is going to be special because not only will every aspect of UPB be there promoting their up and coming events, but the Fall concert will be revealed.  Also in the works is free stuff (and you’re not a college student if you don’t enjoy free stuff), JMU spirit and ice cream.  Take a break from your second day of class and stop by for a bit.  Meet some new people and get even more excited for all of the goings on around JMU this semester.

For example, the committee Spotlight Sounds will be advertising Money Cannot Be Eaten, a new student band, on that day, who will be performing in Taylor Down Under (TDU) September 7th from 7-8p.

Another band you have the opportunity to learn about is the Generationals, an indie band from New Orleans, Louisiana who recently released their album Actor-Castor in March.  iTunes featured their single Trust  as a single of the week back in 2010 and as a band they provide a refreshing change of pace from the norm.  The opportunity to see such an accomplished group perform free is a chance only you as JMU student will get, so take advantage! They will be on the Commons September 19th at 5pm.  Come check them out.

So to recap you need to know:

When: Tuesday August 30th from 11a-2p

Where: The Commons! (in front of Dhall entrance steps)

Why: ITS FREE!
